Nevada Highway Patrol increases patrols over holiday weekend
On Behalf of Bradley, Drendel & Jeanney • Jul 09, 2015
Fireworks, barbecues and getting together with friends and family are a few things most Americans think of around the Fourth of July. But people may not know it is also a time that is attributed to an increase in drunk drivers and drunk driving accidents. In response to this, the Nevada Highway Patrol has released their intention to increase patrols for the time surrounding the summer holiday. They hope this will deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.
There are many reasons the NHP would want to discourage drunk drivers. Drunk drivers are responsible for hundreds of car accidents and injuries in Reno and the surrounding area each year. Alcohol is a contributing factor in many crashes around the Fourth of July in recent years. This is why the state traffic safety administration is so focused on decreasing the number of drunk drivers on Nevada roads.
The increased patrols will consist mainly of an increase in Nevada state troopers along major highways. According to the Nevada Office for Traffic Safety, every year the Independence Day holiday weekend brings an increase of alcohol consumption. The abundance of alcohol shows up in drivers and results in increased serious injuries and fatalities in drunk driving-related accidents. Nevada State Troopers are hoping to set a firm example that drinking and driving isn’t tolerated on holiday weekends.
Strong consequences await those facing drunk driving related charges. Heavy fines, loss of license and jail time are all likely consequences if convicted of a drunk driving related offense. Despite criminal punishments, there is also the possibility that serious injuries or death could result to innocent drivers involved in the accident. These innocent people have rights if wrongly harmed in an accident with a drunk driver.
